As LGBTQ Pride marches took place across the nation on Sunday, a message of support appeared on President Barack Obama's Twitter account.

In June of 2015, the Supreme Court ruled that all 50 states must allow same-sex marriage, a high point of Obama's presidential tenure.

This year's round of Pride events come during a difficult time for members of the LGBTQ community. Earlier this month, 49 people were killed in a mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.

Obama condemned the shooting -- the most deadly in recent U.S. history -- in a speech given later that day.

"This is an especially heartbreaking day for our friends, our fellow Americans, who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender," he said. "The place where they were attacked was more than a nightclub. It is a place of solidarity and empowerment, where people come together to raise awareness, to speak their minds and to advocate for their civil rights."
